Data from: A novel method for fish reproduction: one-step insemination with fresh pituitary extract and sperm from the same male [Dataset]. *MATE Institutional Repository*. --- ## Description The aim of this study was to investigate a novel approach to the induced propagation of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) by examining the combined application of freshly collected African catfish pituitary extract hormonal induction and the ovarian lavage/insemination method. According to our concept, the pituitary gland of the donor male could also be used for the hormonal induction of females, while the sperm extracted from the same male is injected into the ovaries of the females to be propagated (ovarian lavage/insemination). Three experimental series were conducted. In the first experiment (E1), the effects of intramuscular injection of fresh pituitary extract with insemination (IM-IS) were tested against the in vitro fertilisation (IVF, control) technique using OvopelTM (D-Ala⁶, Pro⁹-NEt-mGnRH-a with metoclopramide) as inducing agent on the reproductive traits. In experiment 2 and 3 (E2, E3), the feasibility of sperm as hormone delivery vehicle for fresh pituitary extract via the ovarian lavage method (OL-IS) was compared with the IM-IS and IVF groups. The reproductive parameters of the OL-IS group were significantly lower compared to the control group (IVF) in the second (ovulation rate, fertilisation rate) and third experimental (ovulation rate, fertilisation rate, hatching rate, survival rate) cycles (P < 0.05). The fertilisation and hatching rates of the IVF and IM-IS group did not differ from each other significantly in either experiments (P > 0.05). Based on our experimental results, the combined application of intramuscular injection of fresh pituitary extract and insemination is recommended for artificial propagation of African catfish and other Siluriformes species. **Keywords:** Clarias gariepinus, induced propagation, ovarian lavage, sperm insemination --- ## File Description * **File Name:** `research_data_pituitary_insemination.xlsx` * **Format:** Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) * **Description:** This file contains all the raw data presented in the manuscript. The main steps were: 1. ** Hormonal induction and insemination treatment of females: ** Females were hormonally treated and sperm inseminated according according to the treatment group and experiment. In each experiment, the body weights of the females, the latency times and the weight of the stripped egg batches were recorded. 2. **Fertilisation and egg incubation: ** Three replicates (Petri-dish) of each egg or mixed gamete batches were created to observe the reproductive performance of each female in every experiment. The number of total eggs, fertilised eggs, hatched larvae and surviving larvae was recorded from which the different indicators were calculated and then compared. --- ## Authors and Contributors * József Horváth¹, András Tóth¹, Nguyễn Ngọc Quyến², Ádám Varga¹, Türker Bodur³, Hüseyin Sevgili⁴, Tamás Bartucz⁵, Ibrahim Elkhalil Behmene⁶, Tamás Müller¹ ¹ Department of Fishery Research and Development, Institute of Aquaculture and Environmental Safety, Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Gödöllő 2100, Hungary ² Faculty of Fisheries, Nong Lam University, Block 33, Linh Xuan Ward, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam ³ Department of Aquaculture, Fisheries Faculty, Akdeniz University, Antalya, Türkiye ⁴ Fisheries Application and Research Center & Department of Aquaculture, Eğirdir Fisheries Faculty, Isparta University of Applied Sciences, Isparta, Türkiye ⁵ Department of Aquaculture, Institute of Aquaculture and Environmental Safety, Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Gödöllő 2100, Hungary ⁶ SALAMA Lab, Higher School of Saharan Agriculture - El Oued, PB 90 Chouhada, El Oued 39011, Algeria *These authors contributed equally: József Horváth, András Tóth #Corresponding authors: horvath.jozsef.istvan@uni-mate.hu, quyen.nguyenngoc@hcmuaf.edu.vn --- ## Funding This work was supported partly by the National Research Development and Innovation Office of Hungary (NKFI K - 135824). --- ## Data availability and license The research data described in this README are **not publicly available**.
